Katamatite railway line
The Katamatite railway line is a disused railway located in northern Victoria (Australia) and was originally a tramway which ran from Dookie to Katamatite. It opened on August 11, 1890, was upgraded to a railway in 1892, and closed in January 1987.
==Background history==

In 1886 the Country Tramways Act (Act No.915) was enabled by the Parliament of Victoria to allow for the issue of monetary loans to local Shire Councils to allow them to construct light railways, known as tramways. Money was to be provided to Councils through the Country Tramways Trust Fund which was in turn part of the budget allocation to the Victorian Railways. Ultimately it would be the local ratepayers of the area who would bear the burden of repaying the loans.〔("COUNTRY TRAMWAYS" ) (1886, December 28). ''The Argus'' (Melbourne), p. 7. Retrieved November 15, 2014〕
On August 11, 1890 the Yarrawonga Council, who was successful in obtaining money for the lines construction. The tramway ran from the town of Dookie, where it connected with an existing line from Shepparton, to the town of Katamatite. Covering a distance of nearly 17 miles (27 km) it consisted of four stations, each spaced approximately 4 miles apart, in addition to the terminus at Dookie. The stations were; Yabba South, Yabba North, Youanmite and Katamatite. The total cost of the project was £31,624 excluding general expenses.〔("THE DOOKIE TO KATAMATITE RAILWAY" ) (1890, May 15). ''The Argus'' (Melbourne), p. 4. Retrieved November 15, 2014〕
Each station was established to handle both passenger, agricultural produce, including wheat, and light freight. The stations were connected by WTT (railway telegraph), and other than Yabba South, they included a silo, a rail siding, a passenger platform and a goods shed. Katamatite had an extra siding and incorporated a 50-foot turntable on a short spur.〔Waugh, Andres (2004) (Notes on rail infrastructure) retrieved on November 17, 2014 from http://www.vrhistory.com/Locations/Katamatite.pdf〕
